4 Good Reasons to Replace Your Dental Crown

With proper care, a dental crown can last you for 10 years or more. But they’re not immortal – at some point, you’ll likely have to replace it with a fresh, new restoration. How will you know when it’s time, though?

Read through this post, and you’ll learn four good reasons to replace your crown!

1.     You’re Experiencing Discomfort

If you’re having a hard time going about your day because of aches or pains in your mouth, the problem could be your crown. It’s possible that it no longer fits quite right, or that it’s simply nearing the end of its lifespan, and isn’t protecting your tooth as well as it used to.

Maybe your discomfort isn’t that noticeable, but instead takes form in sensitivity while chewing, swelling, or inflammation. Make no mistake, these are also inconveniences worth addressing, and could mean that your crown is causing irritation and needs to be replaced.

2.     Your Gumline is Shrinking

It’s easier for bacteria to build up in the hard to reach corners of your mouth. For example, a crown that has become worn down with age or doesn’t sit well on your tooth is more likely to harbor gum disease causing bacteria. The wear or ill-fit can create tiny crevices and dips that your toothbrush can’t clean very well. So if it seems like your gumline is shrinking, you’re not crazy – and it’s a good idea to contact your dentist!

3.     Your Crown is Damaged or Worn

The main purpose of a dental crown is to shield your weakened tooth from infection, the elements, and further harm. However, it can’t really do that if it’s cracked, chipped, or worn thin. These flaws can give bacteria just the chance they need to affect the natural tooth underneath, and can lessen its protection from physical stress and impact. Visible signs of damage is a very good reason to replace your crown!

4.     You’re Not Satisfied with The Aesthetics

Poor aesthetics is just as good a reason to replace a crown as damage or discomfort. For one thing, the way your teeth look can impact your confidence and self-esteem. No one wants you to hesitate to smile because of an unappealing crown!

For another thing, if your crown appears dull, discolored, or misshapen, that’s actually a good indication that it’s gone through too much wear. Don’t be afraid to have your dentist take a closer look.

These are all reliable signs that indicate your crown needs to be replaced. However, it’s not a bad thing to trust your instincts. If something seems off about your crown or oral health, never hesitate to ask your dentist for their thoughts!
